A pear tree is usually a small tree of the Rosaceae family. These trees grow naturally throughout the temperate zone of Eurasia. They are prone to interbreeding and thus many subspecies are formed. Therefore, it is maintained that the number of species currently varies between 30 and 60.

Pear trees are characterised by their slenderness. Their fruits are called pears and usually have an elongated shape and the closer to the stem, the more conical their shape. These fruits are usually green, yellow or brown.

When planting a pear, one should choose a place that is sheltered and easily reached by the sun. Pears feel great in warmer soils. However, it should be remembered that they do not like when the level of groundwater is high.  The harvest period, depending on the variety, begins already in August and ends in November. It is worth planting pears next to each other, as this increases the possibility of pollination and ensures a larger harvest.

The most popular pear varieties are: Conference, Clapp’s Favourite, ‘Alexander Lucas’, Pyrus salicifolia Pendula, Doyenne du Comice, Williams pear or ‘Bonne Louise d’Avranches’.
