Sour cherry tree – a plant belonging to the Rosaceae family. Approx. 60 species are known. These trees grow mainly in East Asia, although they can be found throughout the northern hemisphere in a temperate climate – including Poland.

Sour cherries are small spherical maroon-red stone fruits containing a juicy pulp and a spherical stone. Sour cherries have a very beneficial effect on the body. The acids contained in them cleanse the body of toxins, improve digestion and stimulate metabolism. Other benefits of sour cherries include heart protection and reduction of blood cholesterol levels. These fruits can be eaten raw, but they are also suitable for making fruit products – for example, preserves and jams.

Sour cherry is a tree that does not have excessive requirements when it comes to cultivation. When planning the cultivation of sour cherries, it should first and foremost be remembered that these are self-pollinating trees. For proper growth, sour cherry tree primarily needs a sunny position with sandy-clay soil. However, the soil must not be too heavy or wet.

The most popular varieties of sour cherries are: Debrecen, Diament, Lucyna, Pandy 103 and English Morello.
