Climbing currant (black and red)

There are more than 150 different species of currants in the world – especially in temperate regions of the northern hemisphere. In Poland, 6 species of currants can be observed growing in the wild. Orchard species are resistant to frost. Some are planted for aesthetic reasons. The plant grows best in wet and sunny soils. Currant fruits are spherical – their colour depends on the species and can be e.g. red, black or white. The skin is slightly shiny. There are small seeds inside the fruit.

Climbing currants are readily chosen because of their relatively simple cultivation, high healthy properties and abundant annual crops. Moreover, they can be a wonderful decoration of the garden. They can be planted even in small backyard gardens and on balconies or terraces, if you decide to put them in containers. In contrast to bush currant, the corona of the climbing currant is more dense. Thus, they stand out aesthetically and are often used in garden decoration projects.

Poles especially appreciate red and black currant varieties due to their unique health properties and wide application. You can make a variety of preserves, liqueurs from them or simply eat them directly from the bush.

The most popular varieties of black currant are: Ben Alder, Ben Nevis, Ben Tirran, Bona, Ojebyn, Narve Viking, Ometa, Ores, Ruben, Silvergieters, Tiben, Tisel, Titania, Wellington XXX, Vernissage, Fertodi-1, Jonova, Kristine

The most often chosen varieties of red currants include: Detvan, Erstling aus Vierlanden, Jonkheer van Tets, Dutch, Franken Wonder, Jola, Losan, Rolan, Rondom, Rosetta, Rovada, Tatran, Telake, Witan

Bush currant (black and red)

Currants primarily occur in the temperate climate areas of the northern hemisphere. While there are more than 150 species of currants, in Poland, only 6 species can be encountered “in the wild”. Bush currants can reach up to 3 meters in height. They have green foliation. Their fruits are small and round and grow in long, tightly-clustered strands; their skin is shiny and is typically red, black, white or of another colour – depending on the species. Currants typically bear fruit in the second half of summer. They should be planted in areas with high sun exposure and moist soil – such conditions ensure abundant harvests every year
