A cherry tree, also called bird cherry or wild cherry, is a plant belonging to the Rosaceae family. It occurs in Europe, Western Asia and the Caucasus. In Poland, it grows wild throughout the country and is also readily cultivated as a fruit tree.

Cherry tree fruits, commonly referred to simply as cherries, are small, edible, spherical stone fruits, usually red in colour. However, there are also varieties, the fruits of which turn yellow and even black.

Cherries have a beneficial effect on heart and thyroid function, as well as strengthen the joints. However, these are not all benefits of these fruits. Cherries, like sour cherries, regulate the level of cholesterol in the blood.  Moreover, they have a good impact on the condition of the skin and delay the aging process. Cherries constitute a perfect addition to ice cream and salads. A variety of products can be made from them – the most popular are mousses, jams and preserves.

Cherry trees grown in Poland are open-pollinated trees. They have high soil requirements. They prefer fertile, airy, warm, lessive and brown soils. Heavy and wet soils must be excluded. It should also be added that cherry trees do not tolerate frost.

The most popular varieties of cherries are: Burlat, Red Buttnera, Sylvia, Kordia, Lapins, Sam, Regina, Rivan, summit, Sam and Vega.
